March 2008 Mountain Trip
We decided to head up to the mountains last Wednesday and stayed until Saturday. We left Wednesday morning and stopped by a couple of waterfalls on the way up. The first stop was at McGalliard Falls in Valdese, NC near Morganton. The falls are in a local park and so it wasn’t exactly a hike to get to it. It was very overcast and the sky was threatening to rain the whole time. We were the only ones in the park! But we had fun throwing rocks in the water and taking pictures.
We left the park in search of lunch somewhere and we found a Sonic (our favorite fast food place). After that we headed north on US-221 past Marion. By now it was lightly raining and so our second waterfall would be a bust. Aaron and I hiked the half mile to the falls in the rain. I only managed a couple of photos and we both managed to get soaking wet despite our best efforts.
We woke up Thursday morning to a half inch of snow on the ground in Banner Elk, NC. We made our way back to Tom’s Creek Falls for another try. We all hiked the trail since the weather was beautiful. We got to the falls and started exploring. Not five minutes after we got there Andrew falls into the creek!!! We undressed him and managed to wrap him up in Aaron’s coat and toboggan, my extra socks, my long sleeve shirt and Andrew’s extra socks. He was quite a sight. We hiked back to the van and put his extra clothes on and decided to brave it back to the falls knowing we didn’t have any more extra clothes for Andrew.
The trip back was worth it! We found this old mine on the opposite side of the creek near the falls. It was mentioned in a waterfall book of mine, but I had forgot that it was Tom’s Creek Falls that the mine was located. After an hour or so of exploring the falls we headed back to the mountain house but first stopped at the Banner Elk Cafe for dinner.
Friday we stayed at the mountain house and dyed easter eggs, had an easter egg hunt, played ping-pong, watched college basketball (well I did anyways) and just hung out. UNC stomped Mt. St. Mary’s in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. That was the perfect end to a great day!
The Anti-Blog
I must admit that the thought of having a blog is somewhat against my nature. Fads and trends generally annoy me and so being one more person with a blog is not what I imagined doing.
So the future content of this blog is anyone’s guess…
